Recently
I read the universe is donut-shaped

and began pondering these things
over coffee and the morning paper_
what if this is it right here, the
whole thing served up on a

cracked white dessert plate?
Poking it with my fork gives me
courage, then taking it furtively
into my mouth I chew

slowly, allowing all the planets
to align before swallowing hard_like
a handful of pills, and the only thing I can
think is the coffee really needed

more sugar.
